2011 Celebration 80 years Porsche, 30 years Ferry Porsche limited edition

30 years ago Porsche introduced a limited series of 911, 924 and 928 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Porsche company. The 911 and 928 came in "meteormetallic" painting with a bordeaux red interior. The 924 has a "zinnmetallic" exterior and black interior. Seats and door panels wear an exclusiv pinstripe look. The headrest are embroidered with a "F. Porsche" sign. The carpet set came in light beige.

Technorama Hildesheim 2011

Today was a sunny day in lower saxony. This took me to a cruise to the vintage car show to Hildesheim near Hannover. Nice to see two other Porsche 924. They are now in the move from daily driver to collectors car.

day 3 after changing fuel pump relais

After I changed the ignition switch I was sure to fixed the problem. But damn, the engine still dies during driving. Favored places are crossroads. So, I took the next step and changed the fuel pump relais. Part number in the 924S catalog is 993-615-227-00. The relais has easy plug in contacts. For better handling uncrew the upper fuse-holder to change the relais. Since I changed the relais 3 days ago the engine runs without the "dead on crossroad" issue.

If you still have the owner's manual it is easy to locate the relais.
It is position II on the picture

In reality it looks like this under your dashboard

changing 924S ignition switch

If your Porsche 924 starts badly or the motor dies during driving a main issue is a worn out ignition switch. I had that problem and changed the switch by myself. Here is a short "how to do" instruction.

1. check Assembly diagram how the whole unit is assembled (no. 17 is the switch)

You can see the switch if you crawl under your dashboard, it is mounted close to the steering column

2. Evaluate the switch you need. The ignition switch is a standard Volkswagen part. The Part. No. is 111 905 865 L. Your local VW dealer still have it, but there are three different versions on the street. The basic version you can find in many cars of the VW group (Passat, Golf, Scirocco,Vanagon,...). My 924S needed the version with "P" and "S" contact. Next picture shows the different.

3. Dissasemble your steering wheel unit following the steps from the repair handbook.

4. Use a pipe wrench to dissasamble the bushing

5. ...then loose the ignition switch unit with a hexagon screw socket key (Size 5)

6. ...use a puller to get the ignition switch unit safety from the steering wheel column (this is the only special tool you need). I used carefully a c-clamp to get it off.

7. After you removed the unit from the column, you are able to unscrew the switch.

8. To assemble the whole unit use the repait manual backwards.

Good luck!

from Volkswagen SP2 to Porsche 924

The VW SP was produced from Volkswagen do brasil in São Paulo  for the south american market from 1972 to 1976 .SP is an abbreviation for São Paulo or according to other sources Special Project or Sport-Prototype. Father of the project was Rudolf Leiding.
Rudolf Leiding was plant manager of the brasilian VW-plant from 1968 to 1971. The brasilian market was nearly independent from the headquarter in Wolfsburg. Under the code name Projekt X in 1969 the development department in brasil started  to create a new sportscar on VW frame. The result was the VW SP1 and SP2.  The first presentation of  the cars was the german industrial fair in Hannover in march 1971.

From 1971 to 1975 Leiding was chairman of the headquarter in Wolfsburg. In that time period Porsche received a development request from Volkswagen to design a new inexpensive Sportscar to detach the Porsche 914. The project EA 425. The plan was to add the new car to the sales program from Audi. The Oil crisis from 1974/1974 avoid the plan while the VW management fear a weakening demand on the sportscar market. Porsche bought back the rights for design and construction in 1975, to sell the car under their own label.
