changing 924S ignition switch

If your Porsche 924 starts badly or the motor dies during driving a main issue is a worn out ignition switch. I had that problem and changed the switch by myself. Here is a short "how to do" instruction.

1. check Assembly diagram how the whole unit is assembled (no. 17 is the switch)

You can see the switch if you crawl under your dashboard, it is mounted close to the steering column

2. Evaluate the switch you need. The ignition switch is a standard Volkswagen part. The Part. No. is 111 905 865 L. Your local VW dealer still have it, but there are three different versions on the street. The basic version you can find in many cars of the VW group (Passat, Golf, Scirocco,Vanagon,...). My 924S needed the version with "P" and "S" contact. Next picture shows the different.

3. Dissasemble your steering wheel unit following the steps from the repair handbook.

4. Use a pipe wrench to dissasamble the bushing

5. ...then loose the ignition switch unit with a hexagon screw socket key (Size 5)

6. ...use a puller to get the ignition switch unit safety from the steering wheel column (this is the only special tool you need). I used carefully a c-clamp to get it off.

7. After you removed the unit from the column, you are able to unscrew the switch.

8. To assemble the whole unit use the repait manual backwards.

Good luck!
